Start: Tuesday, January 31, 202310:00 AM

End: Tuesday, January 31, 202310:30 AM

Despite Connecticut’s progressive reputation, there are still discriminatory barriers to equal participation in our democracy for Black, brown, and other voters of color--and for people whose first language is not English, particularly at the local level.

Join in solidarity at the Connecticut Voting Rights Act Kickoff Event this Tuesday, Jan. 31st in Hearing Room 1E of the Legislative Office Building in Hartford at 10 am!

Join members of the Connecticut General Assembly and representatives from civil rights and voting rights groups, including: LatinoJustice PRLDEF, ACLU CT, Common Cause in Connecticut, Connecticut Citizen Action Group, the Legal Defense Fund (LDF), Hispanic Federation and others for a press conference urging Connecticut legislators to pass the Connecticut Voting Rights Act (CTVRA).

HB 5718 / SB 374, the Connecticut Voting Rights Act, was introduced on January 18, 2023. If the legislation is approved into law, Connecticut would join California, Washington, Oregon, Virginia, and New York in a growing group of states with laws that affirmatively protect voters from discriminatory rules and practices.

Provisions in the proposed legislation include:

  • Providing new legal tools to fight discriminatory voting rules in court;
  • Expanding language assistance for voters with limited English proficiency;
  • Creating strong protections against voter intimidation, deception, or obstruction;
  • Creating a central hub for election data and demographic information, and more;

When: Tuesday, January 31, 10 am ET

Where: Hearing Room 1E, Legislative Office Building, 300 Capitol Ave, Hartford, CT 06106
