Show Your Support for Equitable Language Access!
California prides itself on being a leader in voting rights, yet when it comes to providing meaningful access for LEP voters, we’re behind. While other states are actually expanding translated ballot access to ensure language skills are not a barrier to the ballot, too many Californians are left relying on ineffective, outdated tools that discourage participation. This failure not only undermines voter confidence—it weakens our democracy.
That’s why California Common Cause is stepping up. After the success of our language access bill (AB 884) in the Legislature earlier this year, we were disappointed to see it vetoed by Governor Newsom. But we’ve listened, learned, and are gearing up to introduce a revised proposal in 2025 that will be stronger, more practical, and impossible to ignore.
This revamped bill will tackle the same core issue — expanding language access for voters who need it most — while addressing concerns about cost and feasibility. It will introduce phased implementation, focus on the areas with the greatest need, and ensure that resources are allocated in a way that’s fair and efficient.
This work is about more than policy — it’s about justice. Together, we can make sure California sets the standard for inclusive democracy, ensuring every voter has the tools they need to make their voice heard.
