Take action: allow cameras in New York courtrooms

New Yorkers deserve access to the everyday court proceedings that impact them, which is why the state must join the vast majority of other judicial systems across the country and permit proceedings to be broadcast.

Here’s how you can help – A712a, introduced by Assemblymember Weprin, permits cameras in New York courtrooms. The bill is currently in the Assembly Judiciary Committee after being passed by the State Senate. Can you call the Assembly and help get this bill over the finish line?

1. Find your Assemblymember here.

2. Give them a call! If you’re not sure what to say, here’s a script you can use:

“Hi, my name is [NAME] and I’m calling from [CITY/TOWN] to urge [ASSEMBLYMEMBER] to co-sponsor and support A712a which permits the use of cameras in courtrooms.

New York is only one of two states in the country that does not allow cameras in courtrooms, which makes us an outlier lagging behind in judicial transparency. We deserve access to the everyday court proceedings that impact us. Thank you.”
