ACT NOW: Condemn the Montana legislature for silencing Rep. Zooey Zephyr

Montana legislature

Rep. Zooey Zephyr holding her microphone in the air

NEW: Montana House Republicans just voted along party lines to permanently ban Rep. Zooey Zephyr from speaking until next term – a disturbing, authoritarian decision to overrule voters and stifle dissent. [1]

You read that right. The only trans woman in the Montana House won’t be allowed to speak or even show up for the remainder of the legislative session!

Instead, they’re forcing her to vote remotely and silently – including about bills that would directly impact the trans community and the 11,000 Montanans she was elected to represent.

I need your help to let Montana extremists know exactly what we think of their authoritarian move to censure a democratically elected official, just for standing on the House floor with her microphone raised in solidarity with protestors.

No fairly elected leader should be dismissed for engaging in dissent and debate - that’s un-American. Condemn the anti-democracy decision to censure Rep. Zooey Zephyr today >>

After over a week of being silenced on the House floor, Rep. Zooey Zephyr is facing possible expulsion for advocating for her constituents.

Over 15,000 Common Cause members have already signed on to support her – will you join them in demanding the Montana legislature vote NO on censure or expulsion?

Amid nationwide legislative attacks on transgender people, far-right partisans controlling the Montana House have refused to recognize Zephyr – the only trans woman in the Montana House – since April 18th, when she spoke out against an anti-trans bill.

Now, Zephyr is facing a disciplinary vote from extremists who claim that her choice to stand in the House floor with her microphone raised in solidarity with protestors was equivalent to “encouraging an insurrection.”

That’s absurd. Let’s call this injustice what it is – a blatant, transphobic effort by authoritarian politicians to overrule voters and stifle dissent.

We must protect the sacred right of peaceful protest and the right of the voters, not legislative leaders, to determine who represents them. If you agree, can you urge the Montana legislature to VOTE NO on expulsion or censure today? >>>

Montana must not silence democratically elected lawmakers for their dissent. Rep. Zephyr's constituents elected her to represent them – and shutting her down for simply standing on the House floor with her microphone raised in solidarity with protestors is unjust.

Our elected officials must be allowed to represent us – and participate in the debate and legislative processes that come with their office.
