60 Years of Medicare & Medicaid: A Celebration and Commitment March & Rally
Start: Wednesday, July 30, 2025•05:30 PM

Join with fellow New Yorkers as we hit the streets once again to:
- Celebrate the successes and popularity of Medicare and Medicaid on their 60th anniversary!
- Commit ourselves to protecting, improving, and expanding both of these programs.
- Call on our state leaders to gather right away this coming fall to prevent and mitigate the very real harms that will soon fall upon us, our families, and our communities under the new, horrendous federal tax cut law.
We'll be gathering in Foley Square at 5:30 p.m. on Wed. July 30th, and then march down Broadway to City Hall Park. On the way, we'll stop in front of 250 Broadway where some of our state and city leaders have their offices, to demand they act promptly to protect New Yorkers' health insurance coverage and our health care system by enacting a Medicare-for-All-style universal health care program. Be sure to bring signs and banners, and friends and family!
GET READY:
- BRING WATER!!! Stay hydrated. Fill & bring your own reusable bottle.
- Your own banners & signs are encouraged! Find some suggested slogans HERE.
- Wear comfortable clothing & shoes - estimated temps will be in the mid 80's
- Healthcare workers, wear your scrubs / white coats!
- Union members, wear your union drip!

For the past 60 years, Medicare and Medicaid have been the bedrocks of our health care system in the US. Together, they have kept millions of people healthy and alive, and living in dignity out of poverty. They now provide insurance coverage to 135 million people nationally, including 11 million in New York. They also are the financial undergirding of our entire health care delivery system that we ALL rely on, including our hospitals, community health centers, medical practices, nursing homes, and home care programs. Viva Medicare and Medicaid!
However, both programs are now facing severe attacks under the new huge tax cut law just enacted by Congress and Donald Trump. Over the next decade...
- Medicaid spending will be intentionally cut by over $1 trillion, and Medicare will be forced to cut $500 billion because the federal debt will increase by another $3.5 trillion.
- 17 million people will lose their health insurance coverage.
- Health care prices will increase for all of us.
- Out-of-pocket costs for health insurance premiums, deductibles, and co-pays will go way up.
- Health insurance markets will become unstable.
- Funding for hospitals and other facilities will be slashed, leading to cutbacks in services and outright closures.
- Medicare payments to doctors will go down and many will stop taking it.
- Many health care workers will lose their jobs.
