Sign the Petition: Facebook is failing our democracy
CEO Mark Zuckerberg and the Facebook team
Facebook has just unleashed a new torrent of harmful disinformation and hate speech on its platform -- by giving itself the green light to lift former President Donald Trump’s ban, despite his threats to double down on his Big Lie about the integrity of our elections.
Facebook’s Oversight Board has now recommended letting Trump back on the platform -- even though just this week, he loudly repeated the same lies about the 2020 election that incited a deadly riot at the Capitol.
His statement, which once again falsely claimed that the election was stolen from him, is just a harrowing preview of how he’ll use his Facebook reach to push his harmful conspiracy theories to millions of people.
This failure on Facebook’s part to uphold its own civic integrity policies is disappointing -- but frankly, not surprising. Before, during, and after the 2020 election, Facebook often looked the other way when Trump abused the platform to spread disinformation, amplify hate speech, and incite violence.
For the sake of our democracy and the safety of the American people, Facebook must strengthen its civic integrity policies and close dangerous loopholes -- like the exception that allows political figures to put blatant disinformation in their ads. And the platform must stop relying on its Oversight Board -- a wholly inadequate body that is accountable to Mark Zuckerberg, not the public -- to make its content moderation decisions.
Plus, Facebook must start vigorously enforcing the policies it already has put in place along with new ones to protect voters. That means consistently applying misinformation labels to inaccurate posts, cracking down on groups that glorify violence and amplify conspiracy theories, and more.
Disinformation on Facebook and other social media platforms has led to voter suppression and real-world violence -- and has weakened trust in our civic institutions. And Facebook has yet to show that it’s up to the task of consistently using its policies to protect its own users.
It’s time to demand better from this powerful social media giant. If you believe that Facebook must be held accountable for failing our democracy -- and must commit to protecting it going forward -- add your name today.

The Facebook Oversight Board has recommended that Facebook lift its suspension of former President Trump’s account -- inviting him to once again spread harmful disinformation and hate speech on a platform that has repeatedly failed to hold him to any standard.
January 6th proved just how dangerous Trump’s lies are, as armed rioters attacked our Capitol -- and by giving him yet another platform to spread these conspiracy theories, Facebook is complicit in whatever happens next. We call on Facebook to strengthen its civic integrity policies and close loopholes that Trump and other bad actors are exploiting, start aggressively enforcing new and existing policies, and stop outsourcing content moderation decisions to its inadequate Oversight Board.
