Join Our Fight for Fair Redistricting for California
Governor Gavin Newsom
The California Fair Maps Act, which California Common Cause helped pass back in 2019, requires our local legislative districts to be drawn in a fair and independent way.
But cities and counties found ways to undermine the law in the last redistricting cycle, and school boards are totally free to gerrymander. The shameful actions of the Los Angeles City Council last year are a perfect example of how cities subverted the law behind closed doors.
The first of our two major anti-gerrymandering bills, AB 1248, would require cities and counties with more than 300,000 people and educational districts with more than 500,000 people to use independent redistricting commissions starting in 2030. Our largest jurisdictions should be using a proven pro-democracy reform.
But even in places that wouldn’t be required to have independent redistricting commissions, we can make sure the process is still fair and transparent via our second anti-gerrymandering bill, AB 764.
AB 764 strengthens the FAIR MAPS Act in a variety of ways to make it harder for self-serving politicians to subvert the law. Critically, AB 764 would close a huge loophole that still allows politicians to draw lines that protect their own re-election chances.
We need to make a big push to see these bills through. Sign this petition if you support fair redistricting practices!

Gerrymandering simply has no place in California. AB 1248, would require cities and counties with more than 300,000 people and educational districts with more than 500,000 people to adopt a proven independent redistricting rules that we use on the statewide level.
And even in places that wouldn’t be required to have independent redistricting commissions – we can make sure the process is still fair and transparent by passing our other bill, AB 764, to close loopholes and standardize high standards for fairness and public input when maps are drawn.
Independent redistricting works. Let's bring common sense independent redistricting rules to the local level.
